Dr. Herbert Miller II is a native of Winston-Salem, N.C. He is the son of the late Herbert Miller Sr. and Brenda Gordon Miller. Rev. Miller received the call to preach while living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he served at Redeemer Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Alfred Harris. At Redeemer he served as a member of the Deacon Board, as Youth Minister, and co-coordinator of the Men’s Fellowship. He taught Adult and Youth Sunday School, Adult and Youth Bible Study, and fulfilled counseling and preaching duties at the pastor’s request.

He united with Union Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, NC in May of 1999 where he was employed as the Ministry Assistant (Assistant Pastor) under the leadership of Dr. Sir Walter Mack Jr. During his tenure at Union Baptist, he assisted the Pastor in fulfilling pastoral duties for over 4,000 parishioners. At Union he assumed numerous responsibilities. Some of his duties included: Ministerial training, Diaconate training, counseling, preaching, teaching, Christian Education, New Members Orientation, overseeing the Missions and Evangelism Department, Youth Ministry, Food and Clothing Bank, and fulfilled many other pastoral duties at the request of the pastor.

Dr. Miller was called to The First Baptist Church of Lexington, North Carolina in October 2004. Upon his arrival, many wayward members and the church experienced tremendous growth. When he arrived at First Baptist there were about fifty people on the roll and about forty people in attendance for Sunday worship. Under his leadership, the membership grew from about fifty members to approximately 440 members. First Baptist Church now held two Sunday Services, 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM and two weekly Bible Studies. First Baptist Church grew beyond measure and was heralded as a community church.

Pastor Miller believes ministry happens not only inside the church, but outside the church as well. He worked to unite the church and community and also reached out to community officials, schools, other churches, pastors, etc. Because of his concern for the community, he brought the Mayor, City Manager, and the Executive Directors of all the community agencies associated with housing together to form a Housing Coalition.

He and his wife are the former publishers of the only African-American newspaper in Davidson County. The Voice of African-Americans in Piedmont and Vicinity was distributed in Lexington, Thomasville, Mocksville, Salisbury, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and other surrounding cities.

Under the leadership of Dr. Miller, the church completed an extensive building/remodeling project. This project included: Remodeling the sanctuary; a new roof on the sanctuary; installing a new sound system; resurfacing the parking areas; removing the administrative offices from the old wing and remodeling it for the First Baptist Child Development Center, increasing their capacity and providing additional jobs in the community, and updating equipment and playground facilities; Building a new administrative wing that houses the pastor’s office, the administrative office, board room, lounge, and two unisex bathrooms. First Baptist Church was blessed to be able to complete this project in the midst of the Great Recession that occurred 2007-2009.

Dr. Miller also led the church in forming a non-profit organization, The Village One Inc. The focus of this organization is job-creation and developing human capital, while fostering economic development and growth.

He is a much sought after preacher and has preached internationally in Boi Cayman, Haiti and Port au Prince, Haiti. He is a former member of the Minister’s Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity and the Lexington Community Ministers Conference and has served on the Board of Management for the Winston Lake Family YMCA.

Dr. Miller has previously served as Adjunct Professor at Carolina Christian College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as Adjunct Professor at Davidson County Community College, Site Director and Professor at Apex School of Theology, on the Board of Trustees for United Cornerstone School of Divinity in Thomasville, North Carolina, where he also served as Adjunct Professor, and on the Board of Trustees for Aids Care Services of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

He currently serves as Faculty Mentor at United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio.

Miller also previously served on the J. Smith Young YMCA Board of Directors, Edward C. Smith Civic Center Board of Directors, Family Services of Davidson County Board of Directors, the Lexington Planning Board and Board of Adjustment, the Wake Forest Baptist Health Lexington Medical Center Board of Directors and the Board of Directors for the Village One Inc. Board of Directors.

In 2013, he was elected to the City Council of Lexington, North Carolina. He resigned from the council in June of 2015 when he was called to the Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle of Flint, Michigan.

Dr. Miller continues to seek out ways for the church to impact the community. He is currently working with the Metropolitan Housing Development Corporation developing strategies to rehabilitate, revitalize and redevelop the community around the church. His goal is for Metropolitan to impact the community for Christ by ministering to the total person through mind, body and soul.

The newly established vision for Metropolitan is to be “A church impacting the community through relevant ministry that addresses the needs of the community and makes a difference in the lives of people.”

He is a graduate of Shaw University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Religion and Philosophy. At Shaw, he was a member of the National Dean’s List and the Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society.

Dr. Miller earned his Master of Divinity from Wake Forest University Divinity School. At Wake Forest, he served as the president of AKONI, an organization comprised of African American seminarians attending the university. His senior thesis was entitled The Response of the African American Church to the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in America.

He earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. His dissertation was titled Developing a Transformative Model of African American Fatherhood From A Biblical Perspective.

He is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. Miller is married to the lovely Veronica Miller, and is a committed family man. He has seven children: Herbert, Wilbert, Faith, Malachi, Amaya, Jemareon, and Nathan.

One of his favorite scriptures, which he considers his call scripture is Psalms 46:10, “Be still and know that He is God.”
